Is Random Video Chat Safe? 10 Rules Before You Press Start

Random video chat has a reputation, and Omegle earned a lot of it. But the risk isn't in the idea, it's in how you use it and where. These ten rules cover most of what can go wrong, and they take about two minutes to adopt.

The ten rules

  • 1. Use a site that never records. Read the privacy policy. iMingle's says plainly that video and messages are never stored.
  • 2. Check your background before you start. No mail with your address, no school crest, no street sign through the window.
  • 3. Never say your full name, workplace, or neighbourhood in the first conversation. First name and country is plenty.
  • 4. Assume you could be screenshotted. Our rules forbid it and we ban for it, but no site can stop it technically. Don't show anything you wouldn't want saved.
  • 5. Never send money, gift cards, or crypto to someone from a chat, whatever the story. This is the single most common scam.
  • 6. Don't follow links people paste. Especially not ones promising to "continue on another app".
  • 7. Use the report button. On iMingle it's in the corner of the stranger's video and on the control bar. Report, then Next.
  • 8. Keep your camera off until you're ready. You can watch first and switch it on when you're comfortable.
  • 9. If you're under 18, don't. Adult random chat sites are for adults, and iMingle bans accounts that look underage on sight.
  • 10. Trust the skip. Anyone who makes you uneasy, for any reason, press Next. You don't owe a stranger an explanation.

What the site should be doing for you

Your habits are half of it. The other half is the site's design. A safe random chat site has visible rules, a report button that's always one tap away, bans that actually stick, and a policy of not storing your video. It also tells you when a stranger is signed in, so the people with the most to lose from a ban are easy to spot.

iMingle has all of that, and a small team reviewing reports. Read the community guidelines and the privacy policy if you want the detail.

Ready?

Pick text if you'd rather ease in, or go straight to video. Either way, you're one tap from Next at all times.

Quick answers

Can strangers see my location on video chat?

They see the country you're in, not your city or address. Keep identifying details out of your background and out of the conversation.

What happens when I report someone?

The report is reviewed, and repeat offenders are banned by account, device, or network. You're skipped to a new person immediately.
