What happens when you press Start
Random video chat is simpler than it looks. Your browser asks for camera and microphone access. The site puts you in a queue and pairs you with someone else who just pressed Start. Then your two browsers connect through a real-time video service and you can see and hear each other.

What you need
Less than you'd think:
- A phone, laptop, or desktop with a camera and microphone.
- A modern browser. Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge all work. No downloads.
- A connection that can handle a video call. Wi-Fi or 4G is plenty.
- Some light on your face. A window or a lamp in front of you beats a bright screen behind you.
The first thirty seconds
Most strangers decide whether to stay in the first few seconds, so make those easy. Look at the camera, smile, and say something specific: what time it is where you are, what you're doing, why you're on here tonight. "Hi" alone gets skipped; "Hi, it's 2am here and I can't sleep, where are you?" gets a conversation.
Ask questions and listen. The point isn't to perform, it's to find out who this person is. If it's not clicking, press Next without guilt. That's what it's for.
Staying safe on video
Keep personal details out of the frame and out of the chat: no full name, no address, no school or workplace visible in the background. Assume anything on camera could be screenshotted by the other side, even though our rules forbid it. If someone makes you uncomfortable, tap Report, then Next.
